Childhood most certainly does play a huge role in who we become as adults. Check out some of the great Humanist/psychologist/philosopher Abraham Maslow’s works. And there are many others in the “cognitive” field as well, and their emphasis is not so much on behaviorism — thank Allah — as B.F. Skinner has been pretty much proven to have been wrong in many cases. A great book is TOWARDS A PSYCHOLOGY OF BEING by Abraham Maslow.

@markrudder: childhood does affect you, obviously, but it’s at *most* 50% of your personality. I have twin sons, now aged 14 – they’re fraternal twins, meaning they are not identical. And, boy, are they not identical. They have completely different personalities; one is into sports, the other one couldn’t care less about it. One of them seems likely to be gay (he’s admitted to being bisexual, but I think it’s a step towards actually figuring out he likes guys) and the other definitely isn’t. Now, these two guys have had *identical* upbringings, so there’s obviously something else going on (and you could tell they were extremely different even at age 2).
