Only then do they become something that one can measure. That’s what Heisenburg’s “uncertainty principle” is all about. But hey, we don’t need a physics lesson here! BTW lucius, you mentioned your interest in Taoism etc. There is a great book that was originally published in 1975 (now in its 7th printing) titled THE TAO OF PHYSICS by Fritjof Capra. What the author, a high-energy physics researcher, tries to accomplish is an integration of the mathematical world view of modern physics and the mystical visions of Buddha and Krishna and others of Eastern philosophy. In this, the author lucidly analyzes the tenets of Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism to show their striking parallels with the latest discoveries of cyclotrons. The books’ subtitle is “An Exploration of the Parallels Between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism.” A great read for anyone interested in this sort of thing.
What sparked my interest is that I’d always been interested in Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism etc. much as yourself. I had a friend (haven’t seen him in nearly 20 yrs -since he got married) who was at the time a physics major, now a professor at Brandeis University in MA. So the combination of great converation with him regarding physics and my own interest in Eastern Philosophy is what formed my own opinions regarding the two.
